Waterfalls

Waterfalls typically require long exposures which require special considerations in photography. Longer exposures work best when the lighting is consistent across the entire capture, so diffuse light works best. Not only do clouds provide this dilute light but they also allow you to achieve a slower shutter speed even during the time of day most photographers pack their bag. Finally, in addition to the consistency in light, consistency in everything else in the frame needs to stay in place so the wind needs to be as minimal as possible.

            • CLOUDS: A strong concentration of clouds provides consistent light for long exposures. It also allows for longer exposures even during the most harsh times of the day.

              Overcast
            • RAINFALL: While rain is great at increasing flow rate, it makes miserable conditions to shoot in.

              Drizzle
            • WIND: Strong winds cause the water to fall haphazardly, preventing the falls from appearing silky smooth over long exposures.

              Breezy
            • LIGHT: The quality of light greatly contributes to resulting photograph.
